Join us for an intensive, three-day, full-time course that aims to provide you with the required skills to design immersive software applications.
The Summer School is free of charge and primarily aimed at postgraduate students funded by EPSRC since the initiative is supported by the National Productivity Investment Fund. However, depending on the availability, we will try to give more people the opportunity to attend the course.
As a part of the EPSRC National Productivity Investment Fund, the Immersive Technologies Summer School will provide students and young researchers with those essential skills required to embrace immersive technologies, such as Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR).
This will be a hands-on course that includes tutorials and project work.
All the activities will take place at the Department of Engineering Science of the University of Oxford, from Monday 25th June to Wednesday 27th June. Each day, the course will run from 9am to 6pm.
It is expected that after three days of full-time and intensive course, attendees will have the basic understanding of app development for immersive experiences. The final goal is to develop a software application which will be presented at a showcase event and, ideally, developed further after the Summer School.
The Immersive Technologies Summer School is primarily targeting postgraguate students, but is open to teams as well as individuals who fulfil at least one of the two following requirements:
- Work on a research project funded by EPSRC.
- Have an idea involving immersive technologies, but lack experience to implement it.
Thanks to the support provided by EPSRC, Enterprising Oxford and Vive, the course is free of charge, but places are limited: to attend the Summer School, please register by filling the form. The focus of the course will be on Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR).
Attendees will have the opportunity to develop their ideas using various head mounted displays and tracking devices.
Moreover, attendees will discover the workflow for immersive app development: from 3D modelling, to user experience (UX) design, storytelling and app deployment.

Fundaments of the following topics will be covered:
- motion tracking,
- computer vision,
- collision detection,
- review of commercially available devices and software development toolkits (SDKs).
After an introduction to these topics, attendees will use this knowledge to develop and deploy a real software application. Tutors will be there to assist and facilitate this development. The app developed throughout the course can be an existing idea. If there is a particular application you want to work on, provide a brief description in the application form and we will try to adjust some of the teaching content around the best ideas submitted.
